Keeping it real: NEW Online Trainings

Keeping It Real: Youth Engagement Fundamentals. (A 3 part series)

We are excited to roll out the result of two decades of refining and testing MBA’s curriculum and interventions about what actually works to build and sustain connections with youth. As we worked on this material, we quickly decided that a 3 part training would be the only way to give this topic justice. It really does require that much time to start scratching the surface of this complex theme.

Now, we invite you to join us!

We are grateful to have you as our allies and collaborators in this important work of creating paths of healing and mindfulness that will impact future generations!

MBA has expanded its services to Alameda County’s Santa Rita Jail!

Mind Body Awareness Project is excited to announce our return to our adult programming with the incarcerated population at Santa Rita Jail.

As of August 2019, we began running 3 new cohorts to 45+ individuals, with a focus on county inmates to create candidates for our re-entry program in Alameda County. The reception has been fantastic with many inmates already reporting positive results from the curriculum. Last week, one of our inmates shared a story that we also saw emerge at the Glenn Dyer facilities in Oakland. The inmate said, “My wife is doing the program with me; I get on the phone and we do the homework together, we do deep breathing, meditation, and do a mindful check in.” We are now making the curriculum available to our graduates so they can share it with their family and friends.

Why MBA Project?

Since the year 2000, the Mind Body Awareness Project (MBA) has delivered mindfulness-based rehabilitation programming to over 7,000 unique at-risk, incarcerated youth in the California Bay Area. MBA’s curriculum provides the most at-risk youth in the most difficult environments – probation detention facilities and youth detention camps – with concrete tools to reduce stress, impulsivity and violent behavior, and increase self-esteem, self-regulation and overall well-being.
Drawing on the practices of a variety of contemplative traditions, as well as the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction protocol developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn (an MBA Project advisor) and the Emotional Intelligence work of Dr. Daniel Goleman (an MBA Project advisor), MBA’s curriculum is a proprietary synthesis of best practices in meditation, group-process modalities, peer counseling, and social and emotional learning models. They impart the tools and competencies necessary to overcome trauma, transform negative behaviors, and make positive life changes.
